0 A.D. boasts a large, highly customizable map editor, a fully-featured troop list editor, and an interface that allows players to view a single game or a large collection of games, all while being able to save their customized armies and strategies to a cloud drive. The game also features excellent tutorials, an extensive modding community, and an active development team.

0 A.D. is played on a hexagonal grid, with each tile depicting a single field, settlement, or mountain. Fields typically grow crops, serve as military barracks, or produce some kind of resource; settlements house units that can be deployed to fight on the field, or built on the settlement's hex to increase its power. Mountains provide players a tactical advantage. Moving through them can stall enemy movement, surround enemy units, or allow allied units to move over them. Uncovering a resource-rich mountain tile is a critical part of victory, as that resource provides money to construct military units, and also allows the player to raise their culture level, and thus the maximum number of units they can research and build. The game plays on a continuous time scale, with AI-controlled units taking action every few seconds.
