This invention relates to a method and apparatus for electrodepositing zinc on the surface of the aluminum strip or sheet to be galvanized which method and apparatus is suitable for use with a continuous anode and cathode system for continuous galvanizing.
2. Description of the Prior Art
Galvanized sheets are produced in a continuous process using electrodeposition equipment for zinc coating. This equipment is composed of a cathode tank, a roll anode and a high frequency anode connected between the anode and the cathode. The electrodeposition solution is usually composed of zinc sulfate, nitrate or other zinc salt, sulfuric acid and ammonium hydroxide. The anode is usually formed of a metal drum or a metal belt which is connected to a DC power source. The cathode is usually formed of a metal drum which is connected to a DC power source or by a zinc-coated drum.
Zinc is deposited from the electrolyte solution to the anode by a chemical reaction. The anode and cathode are covered by a permeable membrane through which the zinc is transferred to the sheet being galvanized. The membrane is saturated by the electrolyte solution and held in place by the electrical voltage which is applied between the anode and cathode.
If the cathode is electrically non-conductive, it is connected to the negative terminal of the DC power source, and the anode is electrically connected to the positive terminal of the DC power source. The negative terminal of the anode is electrically connected to the aluminum sheet which is being galvanized. The current is then forced through the zinc bath to the sheet being galvanized. It is known that it is desirable to force the current through the electrolyte solution to prevent the zinc ions from depositing on the anode.
The current density required for galvanizing is typically from 0.8 to 2 A/dm.sup.2. A typical zinc concentration of the solution is from 1 to 10%. However, in order to obtain a corrosion-resistant galvanized product, an additional zinc plating process may be used. An additional zinc coating process may be used, and it is known that the concentration of the electrolyte can be increased to about 10% for the zinc plating.
