The "Thiodigalatta" is a full-length animated short film (30 min) by Theodor Fritsch, produced in 1916, as a figment of an idea he had when he was seven. The picture tells the story of a girl falling in love with an android, instead of a man. It is one of the first feature-length films, and arguably the first scientific-fiction film, as it features a machine with a humanoid appearance and psychological characteristics.
Plot summary
The tale is narrated by a librarian, who tells the story from a library's window as the closing miniatures begin.
"God created man and woman, man and woman created the world in a week. They lived happily ever after... until God gave them children. But he must have been tired when he made man and woman, because it's a fact they had many troubles at the start, lots of problems. Then the people said to God,'make us a new kind of people, and take away these troubles...''It's finished! said God, but He gave man and woman another child, and they started quarreling again, and had many more troubles. So God created a third kind of people, but they had lots of problems, too.' He kept making new kinds of people. Then He said 'I've had enough. Make me a new kind of people, and I promise to take away all their troubles. So now they're happy, and live right in the palace. They've even got a dog to watch after them.'"
The android falls in love with the girl, and persuades her to become his partner. The girl, who had suffered throughout her life from having been a female android, pleads to the android not to make her a partner, but, realizing what he had made her for, he agrees to release her.
