Now, the Danish director has somehow turned his eye to the art world, imagining a more brutal and hyperbolic version of celebrity as it might be for a modern-day Russian oligarch. His new film, "Keeping it Up With The Joneses," takes aim at the art world with biting irony, a satirical humor rooted in the Scandinavian tradition. The movie is a lampoon of the social climbers, gallerists, critics and patrons of the contemporary art world, but the target of its skewering is clearly the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
CHANG: The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art got exactly what it ordered when it decided to allow the Onassis Center to demolish the art deco chapel where twinkling bulbs left over from Lady Bird Johnson's silver jubilee in 1970 now hang. Back then, the museum handled it all with a coolness that one critic at the time called " diplomatic discretion ".
But to see it, you needed your nose under a glass and your credit card out. The prices were stratospheric, and yet what is sought was not perfection as ultimate accomplishment, but participation in a new, gilded ethos. Maricel Presilla, then the museum's curator in charge of modern and contemporary art, told the Daily News: "You need to be there. You need to walk around. You need to touch. You need to get to know it. To witness it." d2c66b5586
