Pseudomonas cepacia is an opportunistic gram-negative bacterium that causes respiratory infections mainly in patients with cystic fibrosis. In this study, we identified a novel antimicrobial substance, cytolytic toxin named KH22, from a clinical isolate (KH22) of P. cepacia collected from a patient with hematopoietic stem cell transplant. KH22 is mainly composed of an amphipathic protein, and it had cytotoxic activity to a variety of cells including mammalian cells and cancer cells. Cytotoxic activities of KH22 were dependent on the combination of SDS, DTT and GSH. This activity was neutralized by a mixture of antisera against KH22, suggesting that KH22 might be a novel cytotoxic protein.1. Field of the Invention
