.TOKYO — A senior Japanese government official has told Kyodo News that a decision is likely to be made on Friday whether or not to send fighter jets to China's island territory in the East China Sea.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the plan would be presented to the Cabinet this Friday, which would be followed by a decision on whether or not to send the planes.

The official said that if the Cabinet goes ahead with the proposal, which requires the approval of the Defense Agency, it would be presented to the Diet this weekend.

The move would see a contingent of up to four fighter planes sent to China's newly constructed Air Defense Identification Zone in the East China Sea.

The Japanese Navy's chief of staff, Adm. Takahide Shima, in an interview with reporters last week, had said that the deployment of fighter jets was "one of the possibilities" to protect Japan's territorial waters from Chinese military jets.

Takahide told reporters that he could not say with certainty whether or not fighter jets would be sent to China's so-called ADIZ.

The government is in a dilemma over how to respond to China's decision to unilaterally create an ADIZ in late May, when Tokyo announced that it would not recognize the zone.

The government is awaiting instructions from the U.N. and the U.S. on how to respond, but some officials have suggested sending fighter planes.

"I believe it is necessary for the government to prepare for all possibilities," the government official said on Friday.

"At this point, we don't know what the response will be, whether it will be just one, two or three jets," he said, adding that Japan's defense ministry would be the deciding factor on how many fighter jets to deploy.

The official, however, said that whether or not a decision was made on Friday, Japan would not let the matter rest.

"It is true that we need to assess the situation, and we don't want to leave our options on the table," he said.

"What has been decided to do so is only to discuss it with the U.N. and the U.S., and we will make a decision soon," he said.
