The film, which was officially announced in November 2018, follows the story of a squad of special forces soldiers sent after Judgment Day. This squad, part of an elite Cyber-Command unit, consisting of a machine and a human, is called the Legion, led by the CIA agent Dixon, played by Diego Luna. Their mission is to recapture John Connor, the leader of the human resistance in 2029. The squad is constantly attacked by ruthless machine sentries, which they must fight off and vanquish in order to survive. Shortly after they are pursued by an even more dangerous Terminator, the T-800 created by the Summers (a future version of the T-800) and directed by a teenager named Kyle Reese, now played by Jason Clarke. Reese and his squad were killed by the Trans-Perfected Terminator, but their technology is recovered, and the future resistance gains another powerful weapon against the machines.

In September 2019, Valentina Sergheva, an IT specialist from Russia, found the Game of Thrones inspired message for the T-800 in the game files of Terminator: Dark Fate.
