The investigation continued for several months. The Clark autopsy is also noted for the fact that the body was embalmed and shipped back to Memphis for the autopsy, even though the Clark autopsy report concluded that the body had not been embalmed. A subsequent Clark autopsy was ordered by Attorney General Robert Kennedy after Presley's death. Kennedy paid for the immediate burial at Graceland of the body he had been told was still in Las Vegas.

The Clark autopsy report has been known to be one of the most controversial in the history of the American coroner system. Another controversial aspect of the Clark autopsy involved the fact that it took place at Presbyterian Hospital in Memphis, where Presley was treated for his serious heart condition. Las Vegas authorities refused to allow the coroner to examine the body at the hospital due to the Clark's close ties to the hospital.
